Biting the Bullet

Oui Pullem, D.D.S.
I had no idea that New Jersey was home to scads of illegal dentists! Apparently it's a real problem because the authorities are cracking down on these unlicensed tooth monkeys.
I'm trying to think like an immigrant with a toothache, but I still can't fathom why I would go to a filthy basement, sit on a seat ripped from a van, and spit into an empty Coke bottle to get my tooth pulled for fifty bucks.
Take Ecuadorian native, Luis Eduardo Gallo-Enriquez. Luis thought he'd be a dentist so he set up shop one floor below a real dentist in Elizabeth, NJ.
A woman known as Jacqulin paid him $600 to put braces on her choppers which he did. Problem was he didn't make any dental impressions or take x-rays and put them on her teeth with rusty tools. When she called him to complain about a chafing wire, he said he was going on vacation and she should trim the offending wire with a nail clipper.
His patient claims she didn't know he was practicing illegally, but admitted there were clues including the fact that he dressed like a construction worker and offered only digital photos of other patients as references.
Some of these unlicensed dudes and dudettes have dental licenses in their countries of origin, but can't afford to go to real dental schools in the U.S.
So be warned New Jerseyans! Remember - you get what you pay for.
