Stairway to Hell

Soul Train

I hear the word "pilgrimage," I think Trouble.

So it didn't surprise me when I heard about the stampede during the pilgrimage in India to celebrate the Festival of the Earth Mother Goddess, Durga.

Take 50,000 people, dress 'em up in purdy outfits, stick 'em on a narrow rickety stairway, unleash a monsoon on them, and something bad is going to happen.

Someone at the top is going to start screaming there's a landslide and try to get down the stairs. And then it's going to be an avalanche of people and the slowest and smallest are going to get suffocated. I guess we should be happy only about 150 people were killed.

I don't care what religion you subscribe to, shit like this is just a bad idea. And yet it happens over and over again during religious festivals. People never learn. They just keep doing it.

50,000 people are going to show up daily for this week long festival at the Naina Devi temple. And the authorities have announced, "Everything is normalised."

Depends on your idea of normal.

If you'd all been at the dentist, this would never have happened.
