Have I Got a Baby for You!

Under the fascist regime of Generalissimo Francisco Franco (yes, he's still dead), babies were routinely trafficked by the Catholic Church in Spain. Oh, say about 300,000 of them over the course of fifty years.

Mostly young and unmarried, the mothers were told their babies had died although they were never allowed to see the remains (sometimes a frozen baby corpse would be whipped out to fool them) or attend the funerals. The children were then sold to families deemed more 'appropriate.'

All of this has gradually come to light after the Spanish government took over the regulation of adoptions in 1987.

A BBC documentary concerning this misappropriation of power and money will be broadcast this week on BBC2.
