Okay, it's summertime and it's hot and with that come the inevitable drowning deaths.
Yesterday a three-year-old and her baby sitter drowned in the family pool on Long Island.
A twelve-year-old girl drowned in Long Beach, NY after being taken there on a class trip.
Maybe it makes people feel better to blame others for unfortunate accidents and some of the time others are at least partially responsible, but the thing about drownings is that a good many of them can be prevented.
If you have an inground pool, everyone in your house needs to be able to swim or at the very least be able to tread water. If this isn't going to happen, you need to pour cement into the hole.
If you don't know how to swim, you shouldn't be putting anything more than your toes in the ocean. You shouldn't be climbing all over jetties where you can be swept into the sea in a nanosecond. And even if you're only 12 you should be able to comprehend this.
