Over the weekend three runners dropped dead while running the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon. They were all male and ranged in age from 26 to 65.
A Minneapolis cardiologist asserted earlier this year that marathon deaths are rare, but a newscast I saw says three deaths per race is the norm.
I suspect that neither is correct; the truth probably lies somewhere in between.
Would they have died if they hadn't been running? It wasn't hot so that wasn't the issue; the temperature was around freezing.
Is your heart more likely to attack you if you try to run 13 or 26 miles? Tune in to the next marathon.
