The Original Wild Thing

First of all, I was sure Maurice Sendak was dead, but it turns out I was wrong. I must have been thinking of Shel Silverstein. All these children's writers are interchangeable to me.

Turns out ole Maurice is 82, lives in Connecticut, was the unwanted youngest child of Jewish emigres, is doggedly unhappy and gay, although not necessarily in that order.

I never read Where the Wild Things Are nor will I see the movie, mainly because I'm just not interested enough.

Apparently the best part of Spike Jonze's project to turn WtWTA into a movie is that he produced a documentary about the book's author that's airing on HBO.

When Jonze asks if he has any advice for young people, Sendak brusquely replies: "Quit this life as soon as possible. Get out. You're doing a documentary about a brain-dead person."

Now that I might see.
