Bad Week for Scientology

The dude pictured above is Paul Haggis and a few years ago he won an Oscar for one of the worst pictures of all time, Crash, which through some bizarre twist of fate won a Best Picture Academy Award.

But I digress.

Mr. Haggis has been a Scientologist for the last thirty-five years, but he very publicly resigned this week because of Scientology's support of Proposition 8 in California which repealed the rights of gays to marry.

Scientology is extremely homophobic which is kind of amusing because some of its high profile members have long been rumored to be gay - Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Will Smith among them.

Well anyway, Haggis fully expects to be 'disconnected;' that is, other Scientologists will avoid him like the plague. It's sort of the sci-fi version of the Amish's 'shunning.'

As if all that wasn't bad enough, the French (yes! oui!) have convicted the Church of Scientology of fraud! Mais oui!

Say what you will about the French, but they are smart enough to identify Scientology as a sect, not a religion.

They fined the Church's Celebrity Center and Bookshop in Paris $900,000, and then slapped a one-year suspended jail sentence and a $45,000 fine on the Church's leader in France, Alain Rosenberg. All this for defrauding a couple of women!

And now the French have figured out their own laws to permanently ban the Church if they step out of line one more time! So be warned, crazy sect Scientologists!
