Thou Shalt Not Rape Little Children
That's convicted child rapist Jerry Sandusky 'guiding' a young football player. As you may have heard, the former Penn State football defense coordinator was convicted Friday night on 45 of the 48 counts he was accused of committing during the years he busied himself abusing young boys.
Although he won't be sentenced for another three months, it's safe to say he won't be getting out of prison in his lifetime. He faces a maximum of 460+ years and it is most unfortunate he won't live that long.
Also Friday, Monsignor William Lynn of Philadelphia was convicted of one count of conspiracy and a second count of child endangerment due to the fact that he helped shuttle pedophile priests from the scenes of their crimes to unsuspecting parishes.
Well that's two for the good guys. What's it all mean?
No doubt child rape has been going on since the beginning of humankind, or inhumankind, but now, in the twenty-first century we are finally saying that it's not all right. No more blind eyes will be turned. Those who commit these crimes will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Those who protect the rapists will also be brought to justice.
And as we have seen in the case of Jerry Sandusky, treating a sport like a religion is a dangerous thing. There was some mistaken idea that football at Penn State was akin to religion and those who work at it above the law. Priests and coaches are just as accountable as anybody else.
