Imagine you're eighteen years old and you've just found out that you've been married since you were a year old (unbeknownst to you) and the time has come for you to join your husband (whom you've never met) and live with him and his family. Surprise!
Well, that happens a lot in India despite the fact that child marriage was outlawed there in 1929. You try keeping billions of people in line, especially out in the sticks!
Laxmi Sargara wasn't about to take that lying down so she got herself some help through a social worker. The social worker negotiated between the groom and the bride's family and a document was signed by both the bride and groom annulling the marriage.
Almost half of all women in India are married before they're eighteen.
Sounds like the makings of a reality show. Can we ship the Kardashians to Rajasthan?
