There are few things more heinous than the abuse, and most importantly sexual abuse, of children. Going up a few notches on the abhorrent scale comes the sexual abuse of children by clerics, in particular Roman Catholic priests. Add to that the lying about the situation by the Church's hierarchy and you have a winner in the despicable category.
Take Edward Cardinal Egan. Please. And send him straight on the road to Hell if he's not there already.
In 2002, Egan issued an apology (that was read in all his churches) for any mistakes he might have made in the handling of clerical sexual abuse cases during his tenure in Bridgeport, CT and New York.
This week he withdrew the aforementioned apology in an interview in Connecticut Magazine.
He said of the letter, “I never should have said that,” and added, “I don’t think we did anything wrong. "I never had one of these sex abuse cases.” he said, before adding pompously, “If you have another bishop in the United States who has the record I have, I’d be happy to know who he is.” He also claimed that the Church had no obligation to report abuse to the civil authorities.
It's hard to believe he can be serious. Perhaps he is suffering from dementia or just chronic evil.
While he reigned over Bridgeport, he did not investigate claims of pedophile priests to the tune of $12 million paid to victims. That's a whole lot of dollars paid for no reason if he was innocent.
As Michael Brendan Dougherty said in his article in The Raw Story:
In short: Egan coddled child-abusers, and persecuted decent priests during his ignominious reign as a Prince of the Church. His entire interview reeks of a narcissism and self-regard that is so palpable it makes your eyes water.
