The New Yorker magazine would like you to know that the FBI (as in the Federal Bureau of Investigation) is investigating the Church of Scientology for human trafficking.

David Miscavige (pictured above) is the Head Honcho and allegedly doled out whippings to believers with his iron fist and accepted fancy gifts with the other hand. If you're running a church, kiddies, you can't do that.

There seem to be some very nasty goings-on at the church's desert based compound, euphemistically referred to as Gold Base, many of which are designed to keep the faithful just that -- through 're-education.' That involves sending people en masse to "the Hole" which is a double wide trailer where they do God knows what to them to encourage them to confess their infractions.

Sounds utterly charming.
