Denial is Not Just a River in Egypt

So let me get this straight.
You can bring weapons on board aircraft if they're in your luggage. You just can't haul them in your carry-on. Is that right?
Because apparently an American-Egyptian man checked through a metal box on a flight to Cairo from New York containing two 9 mm handguns, 250 bullets, several swords, daggers and knives and no one saw anything till he arrived in Egypt when he got nailed at customs.

You can pack firearms in your luggage as long as you declare it to the airline which it seems our mystery man did not.
One wonders what he planned on doing with all those weapons in Egypt. To add to the puzzlement, he's identified only as a botanist. A botanist! Was he going to be splicing genes with those daggers?
