There's nothing that upsets me more than kids being hurt, but the story of 8-year-old Destiny has made me say, "Wha'?"
Destiny fell 70 feet from her family's 7th floor apartment in the Bronx at 1:15 a.m. today. She's got a shattered pelvis and a broken hip but in all likelihood will survive her fall.
The windows in the housing project where she lives have safety bars on the bottom, but apparently little Destiny climbed out the narrow opening at the top of the window guard.
The girl is the youngest of 12 children. I am asking myself why would an eight year old be trying to climb out a window at one in the morning? Was she not able to grasp the concept of falling to her death? Were things so bad in her home that she thought falling out a seventh floor window was preferable to being inside?
The family is alleging that the Housing Authority didn't fix the window when they complained that it opened too wide. The Housing Authority says they have no record of any such complaint.
I'm happy that Destiny will survive, but hopeful that someone will be looking into what the hell was going on.
