In case you haven't been keeping track of him, Pope Benedict XVI has arrived in Angola where he will spend the weekend. Approximately 65 - 70% of Angola's population is Catholic.
Even the president, José Eduardo dos Santos, seems to like the pope even though it seems as if el presidente was dissed by the pontiff. Angola's president has been in power for 30 years, yet only elected once.
“If I were the president and I heard what the pope said, I would conclude that he thought the real issue in my country was my own leadership,” said Fernando Macedo, a professor of constitutional law, according to the NY Times.
The pope also took time to condemn sorcery. Many church-going Africans still believe in witchcraft and it isn't unusual for people accused of sorcery to be killed by angry mobs.
Ironically (at least to me), according to the AP:
The pope lovingly caressed the faces of children and sketched the cross on their foreheads.
