Jerry Lewis will receive the honorary Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at tomorrow's Oscar ceremony.
In the Sunday New York Times there is an article written by Manohla Dargis about Mr. Lewis that makes him sound like the Messiah. Trust me, he's not, but he has raised a lot of money for Muscular Dystrophy research during his annual Labor Day Telethons over the years.
Who among us has not seen even a smidgen of one of these telethons? Jerry, bloated from some medication or other, sweating profusely, babbling incoherently by the end of the show, is quite a spectacle. Is this the year he'll die of a heart attack or stroke right there on television we ask ourselves annually?
The last time we blogged about Mr. Lewis he had been detained at an airport when trying to board with a gun in his luggage that he claimed not to know was there.
It appears the award he'll be receiving during the Academy Awards telecast is not for his cinematic contributions, no matter what Ms. Dargis and the French think, but for his "good deed doing." He has been involved in 50 films in various roles as star, writer, director, etc. Did you know that? I sure didn't.
