Did you know that fat kids as young as 10 have the arteries of 45-year-olds?
Obviously not a good thing.
So I went looking to see what food, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, is being served to kids in school.
I settled on Johnson City, Tennessee for no particular reason and scoped out what they're feeding the little darlings this week.
West Side Elementary
Breakfast Menu
Cereal, Pop Tart, juice and milk
Lunch Menu
MONDAY — Chicken nuggets with roll or peanut butter and jelly sandwich, creamed potatoes, Florentine veggies, fruit
TUESDAY — Spaghetti with meat sauce and roll or bologna sandwich, green beans, marinated veggies, fruit
WEDNESDAY — Pig in a blanket or turkey and cheese sub, tater tots, baby carrots, fruit
THURSDAY — Turkey and dressing with roll or ham and cheese sub, creamed potatoes, gravy, peas, slaw, fruit
FRIDAY — Pizza or beans and wieners with toast, corn, salad, fruit
First of all the alleged 'Breakfast Menu' blows me away. Pop Tarts? Aren't Pop Tarts pieces of cardboard with flavored glue on them?
Moving on to lunch -- can we say starch? Bologna sandwich? Pig in a blanket? Yeah, well we are what we eat, aren't we?
Wieners with toast?
Good Lord! This is what our Federal guidelines permit?
Dr. Michael Schloss, a New York University heart disease prevention specialist, said the evidence shows obesity is more than a cosmetic issue for children.
"If you've seen what's on the menu for most school lunches, these findings are no surprise," he said. "The time has come to seriously deal with the issue of childhood obesity and physical inactivity on a governmental and parental level."

And after the kids eat this excrement in school, they probably have Big Macs or Whoppers for dinner.
