I don't usually review movies here, but I'm making an exception.
Last night I watched "Babel" on Showtime.
First let me say that I actually subscribe to Showtime. This is a free Showtime weekend. Naturally. Showtime never shows anything worth watching unless it is a free weekend.
Unfortunately during the movie there was a crawl on the bottom of the screen telling you it was a free weekend.
Now if you didn't ordinarily subscribe to Showtime, couldn't you figure out that you weren't paying for it?
I digress.
Overcoming my irritation with the crawling screen, I settled down to watch the movie.
On the whole, I thought it was excellent. The acting was top notch. The crawling screen made it a little difficult to read the subtitles, but I managed.
Cate Blanchett is an American tourist who is shot by a Moroccan boy while traveling on a bus with her husband, played by Brad Pitt. Will she survive? Will they be able to get her adequate medical help in a country where little boys whack off while dreaming of their sisters and there is no cutlery?
Blanchett and Pitt are the parents of two adorable blonde children who are taken to Mexico by their illegal immigrant nanny to attend her son's wedding. That's a whole other headache. Will the nanny's drunken nephew be able to get them back into the states without being arrested or shot?
Then there is the whole Japanese segment. Unrelated? Of course not, but I won't divulge what the connection is.
A teenaged deaf mute who has a proclivity for undressing and forcing herself on father figures is the focal point of these scenes. Why no one suggests that she be committed is not clear to me. At the very least she needs outpatient therapy. Will she start wearing underpants again? Will she stop taking off her clothes when the weather turns chilly?
Quick! If you haven't seen the movie yet, you must while Showtime is having its free weekend!
