You may have heard that the stagehands are on strike and the lights are out for many Broadway shows. Some plays are still running, their producers having reached private accords with the union.
As I hear it, people are sobbing because they can't see "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas." Some tourists come to New York just to see Broadway shows.
Personally I can't believe that anyone would come to New York solely for that purpose, but what do I know?
I haven't seen a Broadway musical since 2002, and that was only because someone gave me tickets. I would not have consciously plopped down $100 a ticket to see a Broadway show, believe me.
When I was a kid, an orchestra seat cost around $10. You didn't have to stop eating for a week to be able to afford a ticket.
Those days are gone forever, and believe me I am not usually nostalgic, although I remember fondly the days when you could take a family of four to a Yankee game for less than $100.
I suppose everyone should see a Broadway show at some point during their lifetimes. After this latest strike is settled, how much will a ticket cost? It costs at least $1000 to take a family of four to see a production now.
Hold out for the gratis tickets.
