Burn, Baby, Burn

Well, slap me now and call me stupid. I had no idea that in parts of the great United States of America you have to have a subscription to the fire department.
Gene Cranick learned the hard way that he should have coughed up the $75 for annual fire protection in Obion County, Tennessee.
When his house caught fire the other night, firefighters responded but just watched his house burn to the ground. They were really only there because Cranick's neighbor had paid his $75 and was concerned the fire might spread to his property.
Fortunately, the neighbor's property was safe.
Some of the firefighters who watched the house burn called later to apologize, according to Mrs. Cranick.
Now if their house burned to the ground they didn't call on a landline. That must mean the Cranicks have a cell phone. I'll bet they pay more than $75 annually for that.
Maybe the county needs to add a tax to pay for fire protection instead of having this "no pay, no spray" policy.
Either that or everyone's home needs to be covered in asbestos.
