Unsafe

If you're any sort of an American sports fan, you should have already heard about last night's Worst Call by an Umpire in Major League Baseball History.

Detroit Tiger pitcher Armando Galarraga's perfect game was not to be due to the wrong call by the first base umpire, Jim Joyce. On what should have been the last play of the game, Joyce called Cleveland Indian Jason Donald safe at first. Clearly, the throw to the first baseman reached him in time; Donald was out by at least a full step.
In what could have been the third perfect game of the season, the twenty-first perfect game of all time, Jim Joyce was either struck by blindness, ineptitude, or probably both.
Which brings us to umpires in general. Over the last weekend, umpire CC Bucknor working the Yankees/Cleveland series, made one bad call after another no matter what base he was overseeing.
Now I've heard that umpires are graded; their calls are matched against replays. Clearly, major league baseball needs to address these issues swiftly and accurately.
In the meantime, Jim Joyce needs to be fired.

This was borderline criminal.
