Steely Eyed

In case you are keeping track of the construction at the former site of the World Trade Center, this is a picture of the largest column yet to be installed. Is it just me or does it look like a giant cross?

There will be 24 of these 60 foot columns used in the building of the Freedom Tower. They're manufactured in Luxembourg. I didn't know they made anything in Luxembourg let alone 70 ton pieces of steel. Do we not still make steel in this country? Is it still cheaper to import it from Europe?

In any event, I am not one of those supporters of this endeavor, not that anyone really cares. I, for one, wouldn't set foot in the completed Tower. I remember the problems the original towers had when they were first open for business. The elevators periodically went into free fall in the shafts for one thing.

I appreciate the fact that the Freedom Tower is supposed to show Al Qaeda that we're not a nation of pussies, but still. Couldn't we just have a nice park on the site instead of a defiantly constructed 1,776 foot tower?
