I'm an American Idol fan. I rationalize that some new talent may be discovered during the season. Perhaps inadequacies in the music industry will be bolstered by the under thirty crowd that croons weekly.
On the other hand, I don't watch Dancing. It seems to me that instead of discovering new talent, it is dedicated to giving has-beens a new life for a few weeks.

I have no idea who these people are and I don't want to know. I think they just look silly. I mean, what the hell is he pointing at?
I actually have heard of some of the "stars" this season. Kristi Yamaguchi (who apparently is the one to beat) used to perform on ice. Now she's doing the same sort of thing in a different venue.
There's Monica Seles, who used to play professional tennis. She was stabbed once while playing tennis. She dances so badly one can only hope she's not attacked again.
And then there's Marlee Matlin pictured above. She is profoundly deaf. I have no idea what is wrong with the guy she is dancing with.
Apparently every season it's necessary to have a contestant who has a disability. Last season it was Heather Mills who has but one leg. This season it's Marlee. Once upon a time Marlee won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a deaf girl.
Perhaps she will win an Emmy for her portrayal of a dancer.
