As if it wasn't enough that Avatar is an overblown tribute to James Cameron's massive ego, now it's getting a spanking because Sigourney Weaver's character is smoking cigarettes. Oh yeah? Well, Ellen Ripley of Aliens smoked too and she kicked some major alien butt ~ not cigarette butts.
There's an organization called Scenesmoking.org that monitors tobacco mentions in films. Avatar earned a black lung as did Nine, Did You Hear About the Morgans? and The Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Stanton A. Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, said “This is like someone just put a bunch of plutonium in the water supply.”
Yeah, well, no, Mr. Glantz, it really isn't. It's not as if they're handing out free Marlboros with the popcorn at the concession stands. Let's get a grip here. And don't say a word about Mad Men or we will find you and hurt you.
