We Have No Religion Today

Where was this when I was a kid? A Catholic school without the religion?

The New York Times recently reported on how Catholic schools are staying open. They become charter schools. I think it's something like turning water into wine.

In Washington, D.C. Holy Name School reopened last fall as a charter school. Out were the crucifixes, religion in the curriculum and in were redesigned uniforms.

Holy Name was just one of seven schools in D.C. to become charter schools. The teachers and students remained unchanged, only the religious aspect is gone.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg anticipates doing something similar in New York to save four Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens.

By becoming charters, public funding is now available for the parochial schools where enrollment is dropping and the parishes and dioceses that run the schools can no longer afford to keep them open.

At the former Holy Name school:

Where mornings at Holy Name began with the Lord’s Prayer, Trinidad students start each day with a recitation of the school honor code: “I will arrive at school each day on time and ready to work. I will treat all with respect and dignity. I will solve any conflicts that arise peacefully. I will care for and protect our environment.”

Sounds good to me.

I guess John Lennon's Imaginings are starting to be realized.

Imagine there's no heaven, it isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.

Next stop. Mideast.
