Can We Please Stop Calling Hudson Landing a Miracle?

Sully & fam do Broadway

Chesley Sullenberger a/k/a Sully, airline pilot extraordinaire, is in New York with his family. They went to see the revival of "South Pacific" (why there is a revival of this archaic musical is beyond me, but that's another blog) and at the end of the production this was said:
"It could have been tragic, but it wasn't. It became a miracle," said Kelli O'Hara, who plays the show's lead female character, Nellie Forbush. "We've never been more honored than to perform for you, Captain."
At that point the audience gave Sully a standing ovation, an honor he surely deserves.
Now, can we please stop calling this landing a miracle? A miracle is something beyond human power. The landing of Flight 1549 in the Hudson without loss of life would have been a miracle if seraphim and cherubim had held up the aircraft's wings and lowered it into the water or if the baby on board had crawled to the cockpit and landed the AirBus.
To have Captain Chesley Sullenberger land the plane safely with no loss of life is a credit to his decades of experience both with the Air Force and commercial airlines. He did what he has been trained to do and he did it well, extraordinarily well.
He deserves many standing ovations for averting disaster and keeping his cool. It just wasn't a miracle.
Thanks, Sully. Hope you're the captain next time I fly.
