The Late Miss World, Mariana Bridi da CostaYou may recall we reported on the case of Tabitha Mullings on November 21, 2008 who was diagnosed in the ER of a Brooklyn hospital with kidney stones and sent home with painkillers. She then lost her hands and feet to amputation as the hospital staff attempted to stem the infection that was killing her.
Now we have Miss World 2008 who died yesterday after an almost identical situation. She was diagnosed with a kidney stone.
Her boyfriend reported:
"She fell ill on December 30 and we took her to hospital where she was misdiagnosed with a kidney stone. They gave her some medicine and sent her home. But two days later she started getting worse. We took her back to hospital and they said she had a very serious infection. She got more and more sick, and had no blood circulation to her limbs. First she lost her feet, then on Tuesday she lost both her hands."
Here we have two women in two different countries (USA and Brazil) who ended up in the same situation, except one died from septicaemia and one didn't.
Word to the wise: If you're a young, attractive woman and are diagnosed with kidney stones, get a second opinion and don't leave the hospital, or at least, go to a better one.
