You may have heard that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was impeached by the Illinois House of Representatives yesterday by a vote of 114-1. He was jogging while the vote was taken.
The lone 'nay' vote was cast by Representative Milton Patterson, the natty dresser pictured above.
Representative Patterson has been in office since 2004 and hails from the South Side of Chicago, where "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" is from.
Patterson voted against impeachment because he had no firsthand knowledge of any of the evidence. He also stated that he didn't feel it was his job to vote for the impeachment of the governor.
Under Patterson's logic, no jury member could ever render a decision on a defendant's guilt or innocence since they only know what others have told them.
Further, if it wasn't his job to vote for the impeachment, whose was it? One hundred fourteen other representatives thought it was their job. One voted 'present' rather than cast a vote. That was another South Sider, Representative Elga Jenkins who will shortly be out of office.
