Sorry, I Don't Get It

Goucher ran for some reason and came in third

I don't understand the mind of a marathon runner.

I have no idea what would possess someone to run 26.2 miles around New York City with thousands of other people.

I can't imagine the punishment their bodies are going through with each stride as their sneakered feet hit the pavement.

They're not getting paid for it. They become dehydrated. I have heard that their kidneys shut down. Their joints come under attack.

I don't think the human body is designed for such an endeavor.

The Masai tribesmen of Kenya are born running. There is no transportation, the topology is rocky, so yes, I can see why they run.

But for someone for whom there is no destination except the finish line? Nope, sorry, don't get it. It's not as if they're going to find a cure for cancer or establish world peace by running over 26 miles.

As Rosey Ruiz might have said, ya lost me.

I think they're trying to run away from themselves...a common preoccupation of humans who aren't busy just trying to survive.
