I can be very sympathetic when misfortunes befall others. Life isn't fair, people get hurt.
Today I heard about two stories of people getting hurt, and for the life of me I cannot work up any sympathy because they are/were STUPID. If they weren't stupid they wouldn't have gotten hurt or dead.
There were the cousins who got into a fight in an apartment in New York City over beer. They both ended up falling out the window. One of them died and the other one is in critical condition.
I guess it goes without saying that they must have been drunk. I may have asked for the last beer once or twice, but I never thought throwing someone out the window was a good way to get it. Didn't they realize that by falling out the window neither one of them would get the last beer?
Maybe they were fighting because they wanted the other cousin to have the last beer.
"No, no! YOU have it! Really! I'm as drunk as I need to be."
The other stupid story comes from Florida where a 14 year old boy tried to save a shark that was caught in a net.
Now you might think that this kid had a big heart and was quite the little humanitarian to try to save the creature, but let me emphasize that this is a SHARK. It's not an angel fish or some other benign creature of the deep.
The shark not only wasn't grateful, but he bit the kid in the belly and wouldn't let go.
Perhaps in a show of adolescent bravado, the young man said he would still be swimming with sharks. So not only is he stupid, but he hasn't learned anything from his lesson.
People like this cause me to lose whatever little faith I have left in humanity, and believe me, at this point it's not much.
