Last Friday there was a news item on WNBC-TV in New York about an 101 year old woman who had been mugged in the vestibule of her apartment building in Jamaica, Queens, New York.
The station showed surveillance footage of her attack. There she was, a little white haired woman with a walker, being threatened by a hulking African-American male dressed in snow parka and ski cap.
Not content to merely take her $33 after slapping her, he had to hit her in the face with more force, knocking her to the floor. That was where he left her.
I burst into tears after watching this disgraceful display of the scummiest of human behavior. I had to watch the later news to try to get a report on the woman's condition.
To her credit, she is a feisty old broad, which is probably why she has lived as long as she has. She said that had this taken place a few years ago she would have given her assailant a run for his money. I have no doubt that is true.
Although the "alleged perpetrator" succeeded in fracturing her face, he has not broken her spirit. He has attacked other elderly women in the neighborhood, but has not killed any. Yet.
Which brings me to the latest NHL foolishness where a New York Islander has been suspended for the remainder of the season (and then some) for his vicious attack on a New York Ranger.
Would hockey be the same if the players stopped fighting?
No. It would be safer.
