The Old Men of Summer

There is no way I couldn't be a Yankee fan. And it's not just that I'm afraid that my forefathers and foremothers would reach from beyond the grave and wrap their icy fingers around my throat.

No, being a Yankee fan is in my blood or genes or wherever that sort of thing rests.

Actually, I am a New York hometown girl and I root for the home team. Yes, I will even root for the Mets (unless they play the Yankees.)

As I write this the Yankees' record is 9 and 13. They have the highest payroll and average age of players in baseball.

Kevin Brown stunned me with his stupidity last year when he punched a wall. This year he is 0-3 so far and making $12,000,000 a year. If he never pitched again (which might not be a bad idea) that would be $4,000,000 per loss.

After last year everyone knew the Yankees had no pitching. Well guess what? They still don't.

You cannot win a championship if no one on your team can throw the ball where other players can't hit it. Similarly, you will not win a championship if no one on your team can hit the baseball where other pitchers throw it.

Ordinarily there would be nothing I'd rather watch than a Yankee game, but this year it's gotten too painful to watch the way they are stunned and gutted by other teams.

It's a Darwinian world out there.
