What's Causing Our Bleak Employment Outlook?

Last Saturday, the CBS Early Show had a "Jobs Summit." In the studio were twelve people who were unemployed.

Most of the people were in their twenties; a few in their forties, but Ryan-Ashleigh Reid, an actress and drama coach, aged 23, was the one who attracted my attention.

Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that being an actor and/or a drama coach is not a real profession. Maybe a handful of people in the history of the world have made a living being drama coaches. Maybe not even that many.

Ryan-Ashleigh, you need to learn how to do something. How about nursing? Or a sonogram technician? As more baby boomers age, the need for medical personnel is going to increase. The need for drama coaches is not.

Yes, a lot of people are out of work, but seriously, many of them wouldn't be if they knew how to do something that people would want to hire them to do.

Two of the people in the "Jobs Summit" were recent graduates and had never had jobs to begin with. Kids, do you know how to do anything? Can you repair a car or design one?

There weren't any doctors, engineers, or computer techs at the job summit. Hmmm. Could there be a reason for that? A rather obvious reason?
