Rio de Janiero wins big platterI don't understand why anyone would want the Olympics in their country let alone their city. It seems to me it costs a lot of money to host it. It's like waving the flag with those rings on it and begging someone to shoot them.
Maybe George W. Bush liked grabbing the asses of the U.S. Women's Beach Volleyball team, but does that make up for the assassinations in Munich? What about the bombings in Atlanta? Is it worth risking that to see some guys in Speedos?
I think the Olympics are totally ridiculous. Sorry. They may have had some point in ancient Greece, but really now? Shouldn't the world just be one big happy family? Is this sort of chauvinism in the slightest big productive? I totally don't care whose country has the best synchronized swimming team. Or the best gymnast, diver, swimmer, runner. It's completely irrelevant.
The President seemed to really want the Olympics to take place in Chicago in 2016, but the Windy City lost out to Rio. Doesn't Rio have a Mardi Gras that makes New Orleans' Fat Tuesday look like a tea party? Wouldn't it ultimately have cost Chicago more than it did to tame the riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention?

One of my favorite James Taylor songs was about Rio. Check it out.
