NTS: If in need of a lung transplant, make sure the donor did not have lung cancer.
Oh, excuse me. I was just thinking.
Seems that a British soldier, Corporal Matthew Millington, 31, died less than a year after receiving a lung transplant from a cancerous donor.
Apparently Papworth Hospital uses lungs from smokers, although to use the breath sacs from someone who smoked 2 1/2 packs a day is a bit unusual.
Their rationale is that while waiting for transplants, 84 people will die, so what the hey? About 146 operations of this type are performed annually in the UK. So better to get a cancerous lung than none at all.
