The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will not support health care reform if there is any mention of abortion in the bill; this, despite the fact that they have been lobbying for universal health care for three decades and despite assurances that federal money will not pay for abortions.
Whereas some bishops are still on the health care bandwagon, others clearly just don't give a shit.
“The Catholic Church does not teach that government should directly provide health care,” Bishop Nickless of Sioux City wrote, adding, “Any legislation that undermines the vitality of the private sector is suspect.”
Makes you wonder about his Blue Cross/Blue Shield stock.
